TWAEA Promotes SDGs Values with In-depth Community Engagement

To address the emerging challenges of climate change, economic growth, social equality, and wealth disparity, the United Nations issued the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, which encompass 17 goals, ranging from poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth to sustainable cities and communities. The SDGs are intended to guide global cooperation and collective efforts to develop innovative structures and relationships so as to ensure peaceful and prosperous livelihoods for all. At this moment in Taiwan, issues concerning the aging of the population structure, intelligent industries, green energy, and youth employment have been on the rise, all of which pose a strong headwind to the adaptability and resiliency of future generations.

Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association (TWAEA) has been committed to developing the accreditation mechanism that responds to policy and practical considerations, aiming to establish a credible quality assurance system that is fair, objective, and impartial, in order to fulfill the corporate social responsibility, facilitate the adaptation of Taiwan’s higher education to a turbulent future, and contribute to global sustainable development. For this purpose, TWAEA invited Professor Yi-Chen Lan, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University, which is the number one ranked university in the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for SDGs, to deliver a keynote speech on “Promoting University Social Responsibility through Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.”

This event was taken place on August 26, 2022 in the form of online workshop, in which Professor Lan addressed topics such as the promotion framework of SDGs, campus environmental sustainability planning, sustainable teaching innovation, and research linking SDGs to expand the university’s impact on local environment and society, engaging in thorough discussions and interactions with the participants of Taiwan’s higher education institutions (HEIs). Through international activities, it is expected to facilitate Taiwan’s HEIs to explore various possibilities of sustainable campuses, to challenge the status quo and to actively reflect on the meaning of sustainable development education under the twin threats of limited resources and operational risks, thus realizing the concept of sustainable development in line with international trends.
